What is TMJ pain?
TMJ pain is a disorder that affects the two hinge-like joints (TMJs) located on both sides of your face. The TMJs connect the lower jaw to the skull, allowing you to chew, speak, yawn, and perform other oral functions. Unfortunately, when these joints are inflamed, injured, or strained, you may experience several unpleasant symptoms.
TMJ pain affects everyone differently, but the common signs include:
- Headaches and migraines
- Difficulty chewing or opening your mouth fully
- Jaw pain, tenderness, or soreness
- Earaches or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Popping or clicking sounds in your jaws
TMJ pain can range from mild discomfort to intense pain. Mild discomfort may resolve and doesn’t require treatment. However, if TMJ pain affects your everyday life, it’s time to visit your TMJ dentist.
