Dental Care After Implant Treatment

Dental Implant

Dental implant aftercare is vitally important for the success of your implant procedure. Although your dentist will be in close consultation with you to give advice, there are still a few things that you should do after your dental implant operation. Oral and dental care should be applied as recommended by your dentist in order to prevent infection of the wounds formed on the gums and jaw during the treatment. Oral and dental care includes the actions you need to take, as well as the things you need to avoid. And please do remember, you can always get in touch with your dentist if you feel that anything is not going well. Here are some issues you should pay attention in oral care after the implant procedure:

1. Your Dental Care Procedure After Implant Treatment Begins Immediately:

Nothing should be eaten or drank in the first 2 hours following the treatment. Also, you should avoid all solid foods at least until the local anesthetic has gone. The other most important aspect of immediate dental implant aftercare is avoiding hot food or drinks, alcohol, and smoking. And also you should avoid contact with the area by running your tongue or touching fingers over the affected area.

2. Antibiotics or painkillers should be used as recommended by dentists:

Swelling around the mouth is a normal part of an implant procedure. Sometimes it can be seen around the eyes and it is likely to increase over the first 2 or 3 days. It is expected to heal mostly in 10 days. To ease and shorten this period you should use painkillers and ice packs. Ice packs will ease and reduce swelling and limit the discomfort you experience. You may start to take painkillers before the numbness is gone completely. Your dentist will give you some more specific advice in this regard.

3. Don’t Brush Your Teeth Straight Away

After the implant procedure, your wounds around the implants are likely to be too sensitive for regular brushing. You may use a small-headed super soft toothbrush. You may brush your other teeth as normal but avoid touching the surgery area. The same applies to flossing. In general, waiting a few days before brushing or flossing around the dental implant site is fine. This waiting period will depend on how the implant is feeling, and how well the recovery is going.

4. Use A Warm Saltwater Mouthwash

While it is crucial for your recovery and oral hygiene to keep your mouth clean and free from bacteria; the best way is saltwater. By mixing a few teaspoons of salt with a cupful of warm water, you can make a basic antiseptic solution. It is recommended to rinse your mouth with salt water twice a day for 1 minute for 15 days. This will reduce bacterial activity in your mouth. Make sure that the water is warm, but not too hot.
